Other Irish Demons

The Irish mythological demons were not exactly demons, so much as they were the opposite of civilized society. While the fairies, and those figures of the Tuatha de Danann represented the gods and deities of human civility, the Fomorians, –Irish demons, or Fomori, were symbols of wild nature. Neither good nor evil, but destructive, and unfriendly to humanity.

Balor – Lived on Tory Island, and possessed only one eye, but whomever had the misfortune to look on it, would die immediately; said to possess or be the embodiment of the “Evil Eye.” Cethlenn was his wife. Ethlinn or Ethniu, was his daughter, whom he locked away in a crystal tower.
Bres – A king of the Tuatha de Danann that was from a Fomorian heritage, and favoured that side of his kinship; for this reason he was very unpopular amongst his fairy subjects, and unfortunately, not as pretty.
Buarainech – The father of Balor, who was king of the Fomorians.
Cethlenn – A prophetess, and also the wife of Balor, though not by any means weak; when the Fomorians battled the Tuatha de Danann, Cethlenn wounded the Dagda; the Good God, a powerful Irish deity.
Cichol Gricenchos – The very first leader of the Fomorians, who first arrived after the great flood; also a type of legendary leader, believed to have brought the first men and women to Ireland.
Conand – Another leader of the Fomorians, who was eventually killed by a mob of his subjects, for treating them unfairly, in his home on Tory Island.
Elatha – Once a moon god, Elatha was the father of Bres, who ended up as a king of the Tuatha de Danann.
Ethniu – The daughter of Balor, whose one surviving child grew up, and murdered his grandfather.
Púca – A creature capable of changing its shape; though the shape can be dog, cat, horse, rabbit, any human its entices to ride on it may be taken off, and kidnapped. Most of the time, the creature will allow the rider to escape at some point, but some legends suggest that the spirits drowns its victims like a kelpie.
Sengann – A king of the Fomorians who was defeated with his brother Gan, by the Nemed. Also the name of an ancient high king of Ireland.
Tethra – A Fomorian who died in battle, and became a ruler of Mag Mell, a realm of the Irish afterlife for those who die bravely in battle.
